Native of east Indices, but introduced to the coast long ago, in Futa-Jallon and Upper Niger region before the penetration of Europeans.

Plant Description

 

Much planted as a shed tree and in some towns in extensive avenues. The fruit is known in many varieties, but little effort seems to have been made in West Africa to select and improve it. The kernel is starchy and can be eaten roasted or dried pickled etc. In some places the half ripe fruit is sliced and partially cooked then dried in the sun to preserve. (Ogbochukwu, 2005.)

i. The bark and leaves have astringent properties
ii. A lotion and mouth-wash to relieve toothache, sore gums, sore throat etc
iii. It is used with anarcardium and the same or infusion of the root bark is given for diarrhea and dysentery
iv. In Gold Coast, the young bark covering wounds on the trunk is used for piles and rectal injection is given as a stimulant in wasting diseases
v. The seed can be used as an anti-helmintic and the juice of the trunk as an anti-syphilitic (Ogbochukwu, 2005).
